We live in dark times. Madmen have been placed to rule the Earth, and where there is not open conflict, the threat is never far away. Values like solidarity and kindness are being put aside for the benefit of what is percieved as personal gain but in reality is only a swift rotting of the soul. There are no real winners here.

”War Horse” can be seen as a commentary to this. But there is not only resignation in the darkness. There is power, too. In ”War Horse” monotony gives place to violent eruption, a war cry against oppression of our fellow creatures, our fellow human beings, ourselves.

I am Chaos

Of course there are other layers to the lyrics and the music as well. "War Horse" is a masterpiece of the monotone, a detonation of dynamics. As always, drummer/singer Tess and guitarist Jahn are working the minimal to the max, coaxing an eternity of expression from an insistent drone and a few simple chords. And, of course, Tess’ brutally beautiful vocals. Power and beauty. Determination and drive. Like a war horse.

I am distortion

We will not even try to place this track in a genre other than a very wide ”rock” spectrum. Tess and Jahn pull their music up from a deep well of influences where stoner rock is mingled with old blues, noise with soul, doom with modal jazz – but the brew they make out of them is all their own.

”War Horse” is the fourth and final single leading up to Molosser Crude’s debut album, originally planned to be released in May 2025 but delayed due to interesting circumstances. More about this later.

”War Horse” kan ses som en kommentar till detta, men det är inte bara tröstlöshet som ryms i mörkret. Där finns också kraft. I ”War Horse” ger monotonin plats åt våldsamma utbrott, ett stridsrop mot förtrycket av våra medvarelser här på jorden, våra medmänniskor, oss själva.

Givetvis har texten och musiken även andra lager och nivåer. ”War Horse” är ett mästerverk i monotoni, en dynamisk detonation. Som alltid kramar trummisen/vokalisten Tess och gitarristen Jahn ut maximum ur det minimala och lockar fram ett mångfacetterat uttryck ur en envis bordunton och några enkla ackord. Och, förstås, Tess brutalt vackra sång. Kraft och skönhet. Beslutsamhet och energi. Som en stridshäst.

Vi tänker inte ens försöka placera in den här låten i något annat än ett mycket brett ”rock”-spektrum. Tess och Jahn öser sina influenser ur en djup brunn där stonerrock blandas med gammal spretig bluers, noise flyter samman med soul och doom med modal sextiotalsjazz – men den brygd som de kokar ihop av allt detta är helt och hållet deras egen.

”War Horse” är den fjärde och sista singeln inför Molosser Crudes debutalbum som från början var tänkt att släppas i maj 2025 men har fördröjts till senare på året av intressanta omständigheter. Mer om detta senare.

Oh, if only I would not ever again have to name-drop other artists in order to decribe what a song sounds like. I mean, it really doesn’t work anyway, does it? We all have different references and a song that evokes Motörhead to one person will make another think of Boyzone. Or maybe not, but you see what I mean. Still, what are we to do when it comes to describing something you haven’t heard before? You do need some kind of handle.

So, to describe Swedish power duo Molosser Crude’s latest offering, ”In the Details”, I could mention Queens of the Stone Age to give a hint of straighter rhythms and more straightforwardly bulldozer-y choruses, in contrast to the bluesy stoner sound that’s been colouring their earlier efforts – like previous singles ”Slave to the Voices” and ”Swallow the Sun”. It’s a bit snappier, a bit faster, a bit shorter, too. But does it sound like QOTSA? Not really, no. I guess I could also say something about new wave (Anyone remember new wave? That’s the genre that came after punk but before all the other waves and all the ”post” things, and was almost as homogenous as grunge) to try to catch a certain quirky simplicity. But then you might think about Elvis Costello and we’re all off track again.

So, how about just listening to ”In the Details” and see whatever references pop up in your own head? Or maybe just state that hell, this shit rocks! And it definitely sounds like Molosser Crude, with their trademark organic, on-the-edge-of-some-kind-of-chaos sound and dark undertones.

”In the Details” is the third single in a row of four that lead up to Molosser Crude’s first full length album, due for release in May. Molosser Crude have ample material for another album after that and are already working with the pre-production.

MOLOSSER CRUDE is a Swedish duo consisting of drumming singer Tess and multi-amp guitarist Jahn. The band started out recording a string of ”live in the studio” singles/videos, where everything was recorded at the same time, in one take – Tess singing while drumming and the guitar split up in multiple channels. When recording their new album, from which ”In the Details” is taken, they still start out with a single take of drums and guitar together, bur have taken the liberty of recording the vocals separately and adding some guitar overdubs to spice it up. The rawness and roughness is still there, but mixed with something more.

Tess and Jahn live in Fjärås a stone’s throw South of Gothenburg and share life outside music as well as in, making for lots of rehearsal and recording opportunities as well as building a symbiotic musical sensibility. During spring 2025 Molosser Crude will take their sound on the road and spread the Crude gospel to other parts of Sweden. Not to be missed if you’re around! Ack, om jag bara slapp att någonsin mer behöva name-droppa andra artister för att beskriva en ny låt. För det funkar ju ändå inte, eller hur? Alla har vi olika referenser, och något som får en att tänka på Motörhead väcker minnen av Boyzone hos en annan. Eller kanske inte, men du fattar vad jag menar. Fast samtidigt, vad ska man göra för att beskriva något som mottagaren aldrig hört förut? Något behöver man ju att utgå från.

Så för att beskriva svenska powerduon Molosser Crudes nya singel, ”In the Details”, skulle jag kunna nämna Queens of the Stone Age för att ge en vink om rakare rytmer och mer bulldozeraktiga refränger, i kontrast till det bluesiga stonersound som har färgat deras tidigare alster – som de nyligen utkomna singlarna ”Slave to the Voices” och ”Swallow the Sun”. ”In the Details” är lite snärtigare, lite snabbare, och lite kortare också. Men låter det som QOTSA? Inte direkt. Jag skulle väl också kunna säga något om new wave för att försöka fånga en viss skev enkelhet som låten har, men då kanske du tänker på Elvis Costello och så har vi hamnat ur spår totalt igen. Postpunk? Fast det säger ju inte mycket heller, eller hur.

Så vad sägs om att helt enkelt lyssna på ”In the Details” och själv upptäcka vilka referenser som dyker upp i huvudet? (Berätta gärna! Vi vill veta!) Eller helt enkelt konstatera att vad fan, det här rockar ju! Och det låter definitivt som Molosser Crude, med duons unikt organiska, på-gränsen-till-någon-sorts-jävla-kaos-sound och mörka undertoner, tillsammans med starka melodier och grymt bra sång.

MOLOSSER CRUDE är en duo som består av sjungande trummisen Tess och multiförstärkargitarristen Jahn. Duon började med att släppa en rad ”live i studion”-singlar/videos där allt var inspelat samtidigt, i en tagning. På låtarna till det kommande albumet är grunden fortfarande en gemensam tagning av trummor och gitarr, men sedan har duon unnat sig lyxen att spela in sången separat och att lägga på lite fler gitarrspår för att piffa till det och återta lite av den energi som försvinner jämfört med ett liveframträdande. Rått och organiskt är det fortfarande, men blandat med någonting mer.

Tess och Jahn bor i Fjärås strax söder om Göteborg och delar livet både i och utanför musiken, vilket ger gott om möjligheter till att repa och spela in, och att bygga upp ett symbiotiskt musikaliskt samarbete. Under våren 2025 kommer Molosser Crude att åka ut och sprida sitt unika sound i landet – Göteborg och Motala i mars, Stockholm i april, och sedan … vem vet? Kanske runt hörnet för dig? On SWALLOW THE SUN, the second single leading up to Swedish power duo MOLOSSER CRUDE’S debut album, relentless riffs lay down a darkly psychedelic groove with raw, explosive choruses and cool vocals on a solid foundation of bluesy stoner rock sensibilities.

What would it sound like if the Jimi Hendrix Experience were to emerge from an extremely lengthy recording session at the Electric Lady Studios in New York to find that more than twenty years had passed, and in a dark, rainy street they met up with grim noise riff rockers Unsane, hit it off and decided to combine their capabilities? Well, to start with you’d have six people, whereas Swedish power duo MOLOSSER CRUDE have to make do with only two: drumming vocalist Tess and multi-amp guitar player Jahn. On their new single SWALLOW THE SUN, however, they do manage to merge the hypnotic drones of bluesy sixties psychedelia and the jazz-based swing of that era’s drumming and singing with the darkness, harsher rhythms and merciless drive of later decades, long past the summer of love.

With earlier releases, Molosser Crude have – reluctantly – defined themselves as a stoner rock outfit, throwing in grunge, blues, noise and jazz to round out the bill – and probably that still stands for Swallow the Sun. At least if you look at ur-stoners Kyuss rather than at later derivates; with songs ranging from furious Green Machine to dreamy Catamaran, the Palm Springs Desert combo reached far and wide with few regards to style. The same can be said of Molosser Crude, whose only real defining factor is the combined experience, sensibility and energy of its members. Any riff-hungry listener will get her or his fill from Swallow the Sun and the duo’s other offerings.

And yes, we know that the Jimi Hendrix Experience never recorded in Jimi’s New York studio, but hey, poetic licence, huh?

Previously, Molosser Crude have a few ”live in the studio” singles/videos under their belt, and just like the first single from the studio album, ”Slave to the Voices” (released January 31, 2025), ”Swallow the Sun” is built on a foundation of one take, simultaneous, no click track recording of drums and the main guitar/bass tracks. With separately recorded vocals, a few guitar overdubs and some nifty producing the end result is an organic, dynamic, persistent track that just won’t let you go. Drummer/vocalist Tess and guitarist Jahn share a life outside the music as well as inside, which allows frequent rehearsals and a level of communication that borders on the telepathic.

Om The Jimi Hendrix Experience hade kommit ut från Electric Lady Studios i New York efter en ovanligt lång inspelningssession, upptäckt att det gått tjugofem år, träffat på noiserockarna Unsane på en mörk, regnig gata och bestämt sig för att förena sina musikaliska förmågor, hur hade det låtit då? Det får vi tyvärr aldrig veta, men däremot har svenska powerduon Molosser Crude på sin nya singel Swallow the Sun lyckats smälta samman sextiotalets bluesiga, hypnotiska psykedelia och jazzbaserade trumspel och sång med råare rytmer, större mörker och ett oförsonligt driv som kommer från en tid då the Summer of Love för länge sedan var förbi.

Vid sina tidigare släpp har Molosser Crude med sjungande trummisen Tess och multiförstärkargitarristen Jahn – motvilligt – definierat sin musik som stonerrock, fast även slängt in grunge, blues, noise och jazz för att bredda bilden lite. Det kan antagligen stämma även för Swallow the Sun, särskilt om man tittar på ur-stonerbandet Kyuss snarare än på senare epigoner – med en spännvidd från ursinniga Green Machine till drömska Catamaran brydde sig ökenrockarna från Palm Springs Desert inte mycket om fixerade ramar. Ungefär på samma sätt förhåller det sig med Molosser Crude – den enda definierande faktorn är medlemmarnas kombinerade erfarenhet, kreativitet och energi. Och därför kan deras musik mätta riffsugna lyssnare av alla kategorier.

Före årets singlar och album har Molosser Crude släppt en rad ”live i studion”-singlar/videos där allt spelades in samtidigt i en tagning. För att bevara duons naturliga dynamik och energi är trummor och grundgitarr fortfarande satta tillsammans, utan klick och i en tagning. Med separat inspelad sång och några gitarrpålägg blir slutresultatet en organiskt böljande produktion som skiftar mellan det mörkt psykedeliska och råa, explosiva refränger.

Trummisen/vokalisten Tess och gitarristen Jahn delar inte bara musiken utan även resten av livet. De möttes i Göteborg men bildade Molosser Crude under en nyligen avslutad exil till Småland. I dag bor de åter på västkusten och kommer att fira det med årets första spelning på Belsepub i Göteborg den 14 mars – ett ypperligt tillfälle att uppleva denna explosiva combo live!

Swedish power duo Molosser Crude celebrates the new year with Slave to the Voices, a grunge-smelling stoner blues track that is first out of a string of singles leading up to an album in late Spring.

Let’s try an experiment. We’ll sketch a musical map of the U.S., where we mark out four points: Palm Springs Desert in the Southwest,  the Hill Country of Mississippi i the Southeast, New York City in the Northeast and Seattle i the Northwest. Now we try to calculate a point midway between these four. This is where some weird geometry must be at work, because we end up a few kilometers south of the village of Fjärås in Western Sweden. And there we find power duo MOLOSSER CRUDE, with Tess on vocals and drums, and Jahn on guitar.

From the very start, Molosser Crude’s music has been firmly rooted in the heavy riffs of Palm Springs Desert’s stoner rock (Kyuss, QOTSA) and the rough organic groove of Hill Country Blues (Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside), with a chaotic ingredient inspired by the noise rock (Unsane) and avant garde jazz (John Coltrane, Albert Ayler) of New York City. With the move of house that the duo made last year from the dark woods of Småland towards the cold, rainy and windy region of port city Gothenburg, a dose of Seattle grunge seems to have entered the mix in their new release, Slave to the Voices.

The new single, Slave to the Voices, is actually Molosser Crude’s first step away from the live-in-the-studio format that the duo has used in their previous releases – everything recorded live in one take, vocals included. Their new recording still builds on the same foundation, a one-take recording of drums and guitar (played through guitar amps and a bass amp simultaneously) to preserve the energy of the live performance. This time, though, Crude have allowed themselves the luxury of tracking the vocals separately and even making a couple of guitar overdubs. The result is a doomy concoction that erupts in powerful choruses intermingled with slow-cooking, psychedelic interludes, leading up to a chaotic end to unload any excessive energy. The whole thing clocks in at close to eight minutes, but there are no dead points in this immaculately choreographed evolution. As the duo says: ”We can’t stop until we’re finished.”

2023 ended with a bang for Molosser Crude with the participation in Opeth Singer David Isberg’s Doom New Year in Stockholm, but 2024 was a silent year with no gigs and no new releases. The reason was that Tess and Jahn had to relocate to the west coast from their long-time haunt at Molosser Farm in Uråsa, Småland, and this proved a very time-consuming task, with a small farm to make ready for sale and finding a new spot to live on for the household’s population of people and animals. With everything in flux, the time was not right for gigging or recording/releasing, but Molosser Crude kept up the rehearsing and song-writing, and the result is a fat batch of new songs. Some of these will be released as singles during this spring, culminating in the duo’s first album in May, but then there’s still material left for another album, soon to follow – and yet more new material will surely see the light of day during the year.

Molosser Crude’s first gig of the year will be on March 14th at the venerable Belsepub club in Gothenburg, that has catered to a riff-loving audience ever since the ’90s.

Låt oss göra ett geografiskt experiment. Vi ritar upp en musikalisk karta över USA där vi markerar fyra punkter: Palm Springs Desert i sydvästra hörnet, Mississippis Hill Country i sydöst, New York uppe i nordöst och Seattle i nordväst. Nu försöker vi beräkna en punkt mittemellan dessa fyra. Här griper någon form av märklig geometri in, för vi hamnar en halvmil söder om lilla Fjärås i norra Halland. Och där hittar vi powerduon MOLOSSER CRUDE, med Tess på sång och trummor samt Jahn på gitarr.

Ända sedan början har Molosser Crudes musik varit hårt rotad i det runga riffandet hos Palm Spring Deserts stonerrock (Kyuss, QOTSA) och Hill Country-bluesens råa, organiska groove (Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside), med en kaotisk ingrediens inspirerad av noiserock (Unsane) och avantgardejazz (John Coltrane, Albert Ayler) från New York. Förra året flyttade duon från mörkaste Småland till västkusten för komma närmare sitt gamla hem Göteborg, och kanske är det likheten med en annan kall, regnig, blåsig hamnstad i väst som har gjort att en dos tung Seattle-grunge tycks ha kompletterat blandningen i deras nya singel, Slave to the Voices.

Slave to the Voices är faktiskt Molosser Crudes första avsteg från det ”live i studion”-format som duon har använt i sina tidigare släpp: allting inspelat live i en tagning, inklusive sången. Den nya inspelningen bygger på samma grund, en samtidig tagning av trummor och gitarr (spelad genom gitarrförstärkare och basförstärkare på samma gång) för att bevara liveframträdandets energi. Den här gången har dock Crude unnat sig lyxen att spela in sången separat och till och med lägga ett par extra gitarrspår. Resultatet är ett doomigt hopkok som exploderar i mäktiga refränger omväxlande med sjudande, psykedeliska mellanspel som leder fram till en kaotisk avslutning där överskottsenergin laddas ur. Hela härligheten landar på nästan åtta minuter, men det finns inga döda punkter i denna fingertoppskänsligt koreograferade komposition. Som duon själva säger: ”Vi kan ju inte sluta förrän vi är klara.”

2023 fick ett brakslut för Molosser Crude med medverkan i Opeth-sångaren David Isbergs Doom New Year, men hela 2024 var ett tyst år utan spelningar eller nya släpp. Anledningen var att Tess och Jahn var tvungna att flytta (tillbaka) till västkusten från Uråsa i Småland där de haft sitt hem och sin verksamhet i många år. Detta visade sig bli ett mycket tidskrävande projekt, med en liten gård att göra i ordning för försäljning och att hitta en ny boplats för människor och djur. Under dessa föränderliga förhållanden var det inte läge för att gigga eller spela in och släppa musik, men Molosser Crude har fortsatt repa och skriva nytt material, och resultatet av detta är en ordentlig bunt med nya låtar. Några av dessa kommer att släppas som singlar under våren, med kulmen i att duons första album släpps i maj, men då finns det fortfarande material kvar för ytterligare ett album som kommer att följa upp det första – och säkerligen kommer ännu fler nya låtar att se dagens ljus under året.

Molosser Crudes första gig i år äger rum den 14 mars på ärevördiga Belsepub i Göteborg, som har mättat en riffhungrig publik sedan 90-talet.
